Early Life

Nelly was born Cornell Iral Haynes, Jr. on November 2, 1974, to Pamela and Cornell Haynes, Sr. Growing up without a father and being raised solely by his mother proved to be difficult at times for Nelly as he had a series of run-ins with law enforcement. By 1993, at age 19 years old, Nelly began rapping while still working on his father’s farm. In 1996 he met St. Louis producer Jason Jones (also known as J-Dawg) and recorded demo tapes which eventually landed him a record deal with Universal Records that same year.

Music Career

Nelly’s career began with his debut album Country Grammar and it was released under Imprint Records on June 27, 2000. In June of that year he received an overall deal with Universal Records worth $2 million by then label head Jason Flom. Nelly contributed vocals to Faith Evans’ Love Like This, which was a minor hit on the R&B charts, reaching #33 and remaining on those charts for two weeks. He also appeared on Mia X’s single Show Me What You Got from her multi-platinum album The Ill Na Na 2: The Fever. This song reached #40 in November 2000 and remained on these charts for six weeks.

Acting Career

Nelly started his acting career by starring in music videos, such as his own song Tip Drill, and Missy Elliott’s The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly). In 2002, he made a cameo appearance alongside Tim McGraw in The Longest Yard and then later starred as a police officer named Mr. Jones in 2005’s Get Rich or Die Tryin’ along with 50 Cent and Beyoncé. Nelly appeared on two episodes of CSI: Miami which aired on September 20, 2006 (as Officer Tony Williamson) and October 18, 2006 (as Devon Anderson). In 2015, Nelly announced that he was working on an autobiography titled The One That Got Away which is expected to be released sometime before 2020.

What’s Next for Nelly? With an endorsement deal with Oakley, three restaurant openings and a new album coming out later in 2016, Nelly is keeping himself busy. In 2001, he won his first Grammy Award for Best Rap Album, for his album Nellyville. He performed with Pearl Jam on April 28, 2005 at Wrigley Field as part of their Eddie Vedder-hosted Rock2Vote concert to encourage people to vote in that year’s election. His collaboration with Kelly Rowland, Dilemma, was ranked #10 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Songs of Hip Hop. It is also listed as one of Rolling Stone magazine’s top 500 songs.
